Why Did My Oil Light Turn On?

The engine control module, your vehicle’s main computer chip, will turn on the oil light if there is a problem with the oil. These problems include dirty or low motor oil in a reduction in the oil pressure. We will talk more about the latter below. We will also talk about the other problems that are caused by a clogged oil filter. Texan Auto Repair is the best auto shop in Sugar Land, and we can change your oil and the filter when they need it. This prevents the filter from getting clogged.

Poor Engine Performance

The oil filter’s primary job is to keep the oil clean. The oil flows through the filter after it is picked up dirt and grime in the engine. If the filter is dirty, the oil will remain dirty. Consequently, this will cause the oil to deposit sludge throughout the engine. This sludge directly affects the engine’s performance by reducing it. In fact, your engine and acceleration may even sputter and lag.

Reduction in Fuel Economy

As if that weren’t bad enough, when the engine has performance problems, it uses more gas. Consequently, you will notice that you aren’t getting as many miles that you normally get out of a full tank of gasoline or diesel fuel. This reduction in fuel economy can hit your pocketbook hard, especially with gas prices continuing to rise every day.

Reduction in Oil Pressure

As we mentioned above, the oil light will turn on if the oil pressure is reduced. Unfortunately, a reduction in oil pressure can be caused by a clogged oil filter. This reduction directly affects how well the engine is protected. If the oil pressure is too low, there is not enough oil circulating through the engine to protect the moving parts.

Clanking or Grinding Noises

Consequently, you may start to hear clanking or grinding noises coming from the engine. These metallic noises are a dangerous sign of engine damage. You do not want to drive your automobile if you hear metallic noises coming from the engine. This means there is little to no oil circulating through it.

Increase in Hydrocarbons

Finally, the sludge that the oil deposits throughout the engine can cause your vehicle to release excess harmful emissions in the exhaust. As the engine burns away the sludge, the sludge produces hydrocarbons.
