Alternator Repair – All You Need to Know

The alternator is one of the most important parts of your car’s electrical system. It charges the battery and powers the electrical system when the engine is running. If it fails, your car won’t run. In this blog post, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about alternator repair.

What is an Alternator?

An alternator is an electrical generator that converts mechanical energy into AC (alternating current) electricity. It is used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and power the electrical system when the engine is running.

How Does an Alternator Work?

An alternator consists of a rotor (the part that turns) and a stator (the stationary part). The rotor is attached to the engine crankshaft and spins with it. The stator is mounted on the inside of the alternator housing and contains three sets of windings or wire coils. When the rotor spins, it produces a magnetic field that induction-currents in the stator windings. This alternating current is then rectified by diodes to DC (direct current) and used to charge the battery and power the electrical system.

What Causes an Alternator to Fail?

The most common cause of alternator failure is a worn-out or broken drive belt. The drive belt connects the alternator to the engine and helps keep it spinning at the correct speed. Over time, belts can become frayed or cracked from heat and age, which can cause them to snap or break. If this happens, the alternator will not be able to spin fast enough to generate enough power to charge the battery or power the electrical system.

Another common cause of alternator failure is a faulty diode. Diodes are used to convert AC into DC, but if they fail, they can allow AC current to leak back into the stator windings, causing them to overheat and fail.

Finally, excessive corrosion on the terminals can prevent proper electrical connection between the alternator and battery, preventing charging from taking place.
