An Overdue Tune-Up Can Make Your Acceleration Lag

If your automobile is overdue for a tune-up, the acceleration may start to lag because the vehicle will not fire on all cylinders. Texan Auto Repair & Collision advises that this means that one or more of the spark plugs is not generating a spark in its cylinder. Unfortunately, acceleration lag is just one sign that you need to have your vehicle tuned up as soon as possible. Here are other signs.

Hard/No Starts

In addition to lagging acceleration, it will start to get quite difficult to get your vehicle to fire up when you turn the ignition key or press the start button. Again, this is an indication that not all of the spark plugs are firing in the cylinders. When this happens, the air and fuel in the cylinders in which the spark plugs do not fire does not ignite. Consequently, you will not have full engine combustion.

Rough Idling

Unfortunately, this problem will also make your engine idle roughly. The engine will continue to idle roughly until you have it tuned up. Normally, this service is required every 30,000 miles. In some cases, however, the spark plugs will last 100,000 miles before they need to be changed. This does not mean that other parts of the ignition system do not need to be tuned every 30,000 miles.

Misfires/Surges

You can check your owner’s manual to see the recommendation for a vehicle tune-up. If you are overdue, your engine is also going to misfire and search. The spark plugs generate sparks in the cylinders in a specific order. If a plug fails to generate a spark, this will cause the engine to misfire. The engine can also search if the plugs are firing too often. These performance issues are resolved by new plugs.

Frequent Stalls

As you have learned, you will have serious engine performance issues if the spark plugs are worn out. Consequently, your engine will be prone to stall frequently. You will continue to have a problem with the engine stalling until you schedule a tune-up with our shop.

Poor Economy

Finally, all of the above will affect the miles you get out of each gallon of gas that is in the tank. Unfortunately, the engine performance problems will reduce the gas mileage. You may not have realized this but a tune-up improves your gas mileage because it improves engine efficiency.
