Five Signs of Clogged or Bad Fuel Injectors

Fuel injectors have a really important job in your car’s engine. They spray just the right amount of fuel into the combustion chamber at just the right moment to mix with air and a spark to combust. That’s what keeps your car’s engine running, and Texan Auto Repair & Collision wants you to know what the signs are when your fuel injectors aren’t working properly.

  1. There’s a Gas Smell

Fuel injectors that are leaking aren’t distributing fuel properly. Rather, they are introducing too much gas into the engine. You might start to smell gas when and where you shouldn’t, and this isn’t a good sign. Smelling gas while you are driving your automobile could open you up to an engine fire.

  1. The Idle Is Rough

When your car idles, it should sound smooth. A rough idle not only sounds rough but is also louder than normal oftentimes. Your engine will also hiccup and stutter as if it’s about to stall. A rough idle is a sign that you have clogged fuel injectors and there isn’t enough fuel making its way to the engine.

  1. The Car Is Misfiring

Misfiring is a little different from a rough idle because this happens while the car is running. A misfire means that the combustion, which keeps the engine running, within the engine block is off somehow. The fuel-to-air ratio is usually what’s wrong, and it could be off due to clogged or leaking fuel injectors.

  1. There Are Performance Issues

You might also start to notice some performance issues with your engine. Your gas mileage might be off or you might not get the responsiveness from your engine that you expect. All of this points to a fuel problem that could be caused by clogged fuel injectors, clogged fuel lines, or a clogged fuel filter.

  1. The Check Engine Light Comes On

If you’ve had some of the other issues listed above going on for a while, your check engine light might eventually come on. Ignoring this light is a bad idea. It warns you of fuel system problems, such as bad or clogged fuel injectors, or other serious problems such as transmission or exhaust issues.
