Squealing Brakes Are Not Normal

It isn’t normal for your brakes to squeak or squeal all the time. They shouldn’t make noise when you use them. Texan Auto Repair & Collision warns that squealing brakes are a sign of brake trouble. In fact, they could open you up to the possibility of being unable to stop your automobile. Let us inspect your brake system if your brakes make noise constantly. Some of the problems we will look for are listed below.

Brake Pad Vibration

The brake pads will vibrate if they don’t have anti-rattle clips attaching them to the calipers. If they vibrate when you apply the brakes, the brakes will squeal. It’s not too often that the anti-rattle clips break, but they can, so we will inspect the clips to see if they are intact or if they are the reason why your brakes are making excess noise when you use them.

No Pad Insulation

If you just had your brake pads changed, it’s possible that there isn’t any insulation preventing them from squealing. When your brake system is assembled for installation into your automobile, the brake pads are insulated. This insulation prevents them from making noise. The insulation must be replaced when the brake pads are replaced.

Overheating Brakes

As we mentioned briefly in our introduction, squealing brakes can place you in the dangerous situation of being unable to stop your vehicle. Your brakes will squeal when they overheat because the brake pad and rotor surfaces have glazed. Glazing means that the surfaces have smoothed out and can no longer generate the friction you need to stop.

Smooth Rotors

Eventually, the rotor surfaces will smooth out anyway. This is because they have been pressed against the brake pads for tens of thousands of miles. Smooth rotor surfaces will cause your brakes to squeal. Re-cutting the surfaces can stop the squealing and increase the friction generated between the rotors and the brake pads making it easier to stop your automobile.

Worn Brake Pads

Finally, brake pads that have worn down to 1/4-of-an-inch will squeal while your vehicle is in motion and when you apply the brakes. This is because the brake pads are telling you that they need to be replaced. Your brakes will continue to squeal until such time as you get the brake pads replaced. This is something we can do here at our shop.
